Handing over MinION sequencing machine to Ministry of Health and Social Services, Namibia
On December 22, 2021, Africa CDC IPG handed over the MinION sequencing machine to Ministry of Health and Social Services, Namibia
Africa CDC’s Statement regarding the new SARS-COV-2 virus variant B.1.1.529
On 25 November 2021, the Network for Genomics Surveillance in South Africa (NGS-SA) announced the detection of a new variant of the SARS-COV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, following genomic sequencing. This variant was labelled as lineage B.1.1.529.
Africa CDC ramps up training on SARS-CoV-2 genomics and bioinformatics
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA, 22 June 2021 – Today, the Africa CDC and ACEGID have started a continent-wide training series on SARS-CoV-2 sequencing. The comprehensive hands-on training aims to strengthen Member States capacity to track the emergence and spread of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern
RT @djimdeab Productive meeting of the malaria genomics for public health focus group with @AfricaPGI. Made great progress on roadmap for Africa-wide implementation of genomics for malaria elimination @PDNA11 @DrSimonHarris @gatesfoundation @malariagenomics https://t.co/DH3Yuxu5hl
@AfricaPGI @MpangaKasons @joe_wangendo @ZMPublicHealth @AfricaCDC @ASLM_News Proud to be part of building capacity at ZNPHI
RT @MOH_Kenya PS @DrJ_Mburu hosted @AfricaCDC Pathogen Initiative @AfricaPGI Rep. @Joe_Wangendo. The two explored strategies for strengthening pathogen genomic surveillance in Kenya through multi-pathogen genomic surveillance system to keep up with the emerging global disease patterns. https://t.co/4avjSWG2q1
RT @djimdeab Our @PDNA11 GEDIP GridIon has just been installed in our new PDNA lab. Getting ready for pathogens genomics to inform infectious disease management, “putting the fire off where it starts » to prevent next pandemics. Thanks @AfricaPGI @gatesfoundation @DrSimonHarris @EsteeTorok https://t.co/dYpd34JUiK
RT @BeverlyEgyir It was such a pleasure interacting in person with Prof. @Iruka_Okeke (and others) at the Africa PGI: AMR Genomic Surveillance focus group (FG) meeting in Addis. Prof. Okeke leads the FG; she is an inspiration to me and many scientists in Africa and beyond. @AfricaCDC @AfricaPGI https://t.co/Ykm4YO5ckS
RT @vinodscaria Omicron sublineages dominate the current wave in China 🇻🇳 as per the new updates on @GISAID
BF.7 in Beijing, BA.2.5 in multiple cities and previously known omicron sublineages in Shanghai.
So it is not a founder event, afterall. Omicrons are here to rule. https://t.co/zjPYotwoca
RT @vinodscaria An interesting abstract in the recent @GeneticsSociety meeting caught attention, primarily since
🔘was on the #Indian population
🔘there were no Indian organisation / investigators
🔘as published by a pharma company and a another which had(!) operations in India.

RT @AfricaPHF @AfricaPHF and @AfricaCDC have today concluded a 2-day regional Biosafety and Biosecurity Technical Working Group for North Africa in Tunis, Tunisia. This will lead to the implementation of biosafety and biosecurity in regional and national level. https://t.co/1bBmZdq3yN
RT @VanessaMoeder The capacity built to manage Covid can now be readily leveraged to respond to other threats, such as Ebola virus. Genomic epidemiology can help trace outbreak sources and transmission patterns, adding a critical element of the response. So glad Uganda is ready! #ngs @AfricaPGI https://t.co/HuQGJQb1qy
RT @GeraldGmboowa Today teams from @AfricaPGI & Pathogen Genomics Lab-INRB,DRC @labgenpath have started a 5-day capacity building training to sequence all Ebola virus samples from the ongoing EVD outbreak at the Uganda National Health Laboratory & Diagnostics Services (NHLDS/CPHL/UNHLS)@cphluganda https://t.co/7Xxw428Ehe
RT @sofoniaskt The vision and targets are very clear - as outlined by Dr Ahmed @laktarr001 at the #AfricaPGISymposium22. We continue to build @AfricaPGI capacity & partnerships to translate this vision into reality @gatesfoundation @illumina @CDC_AMD @nanopore @RockefellerFdn @MastercardFdn https://t.co/FIb3dQ4v8p
RT @laktarr001 @AfricaCDC has done excellent work increasing the continent’s laboratory capacity for pathogen genomics & commit to reach all 55 @_AfricanUnion Member States. We are safeguarding Africa’s health, one sample at a time.
